Michelin Uses Data to Optimize Factory Energy Efficiency

Tire manufacturer Michelin is rolling out its "Product Energy" digital solution across its global factories to improve energy efficiency. The system collects and analyzes energy consumption data from industrial sites, aiming to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions and energy costs.
Michelin views the "Product Energy" solution, powered by artificial intelligence and data analytics, as crucial to its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, with an intermediate target of a 50% reduction by 2030. The company estimates that efficiency improvements alone could cut its annual CO2 emissions by approximately 120,000 metric tons.
The optimization of production and the development of new, more powerful algorithms rely on data stored on the company's Microsoft Azure cloud platform. Over 5 billion data points have already been collected, and more than 10,000 meters have been installed in over 20 factories. The solution provides real-time monitoring, alerts for excess consumption, and recommendations for various production stages.
Energy-intensive processes such as compound mixing and curing have received targeted improvements. Initial findings, including observed energy consumption variations of up to 16% between equivalent machines, demonstrate the utility of the data. Michelin states that the digital transformation supports its broader "All Sustainable" strategy, integrating economic performance, social responsibility, and environmental protection.
