Michigan parasitic outbreak surpasses 1,200 cases

Michigan recorded 1,251 cases of a diarrheal parasite as of July 9, with 44 individuals requiring hospitalization. Cases have also risen sharply in neighboring Ohio, exceeding 500 reported infections.

The outbreak in Michigan began with two reported cases on June 22 and escalated rapidly in early July. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) documented 572 cases on July 4. On Wednesday, July 8, 239 new cases were reported, marking the highest single-day increase.

Health officials in southeastern Michigan, identified as the outbreak's epicenter, are actively interviewing cases to trace the source of the parasite, which is known to spread through contaminated food and water.
