Microelectronics Overtakes Computer Sciences as Top-Earning University Major in China
A new report reveals that Microelectronics Science and Engineering has become the highest-paying university major in China, surpassing previously dominant computer science fields. The findings come from the "2026 China Undergraduate Employment Report" released by MyCOS Research Institute.
Microelectronics Science and Engineering has now become the highest-paying university major in China, unseating computer science-related fields that previously held top positions. According to the "2026 China Undergraduate Employment Report" released by MyCOS Research Institute, graduates in Microelectronics Science and Engineering earn an average monthly salary of 7,814 yuan six months after graduation.
Electronic Science and Technology, and Automation ranked second and third, respectively. Information Security, a field that had long dominated the top salary rankings, has fallen to fourth place. This marks a significant shift after 11 consecutive years of holding the number one spot.
The report indicates a growing trend of "hard technology" majors, including electronics, automation, and mechanical engineering, steadily rising in salary rankings. Conversely, traditionally high-earning computer science fields, such as Software Engineering and Computer Science and Technology, have seen a decline in average monthly incomes.
Microelectronics Science and Engineering has shown a consistent upward trajectory since first appearing on the list in 2017 at 11th place. It moved to second place in 2025 before securing the top spot this year. This shift aligns with China's strategic focus on integrated circuits and advanced manufacturing.
MyCOS is a research institute that provides data tracking and diagnostic services to over 1,600 universities in China. It is the sole author of the annual "China University Graduate Employment Report," a key reference for tracking graduate employment and salary trends.
