Microsoft has begun integrating its proprietary MAI AI model into Office applications, including Excel and Outlook, as part of a strategic shift to lessen dependence on external providers like OpenAI and Anthropic. This move is aimed at significantly reducing the company's expenditure on artificial intelligence services.

Sources indicate that tens of thousands of AI prompts within Excel and Outlook are now processed weekly by Microsoft's own MAI model, a significant increase from previous reliance on third-party models. While MAI's share in the overall AI usage across Microsoft products remains modest, this development signifies progress in creating competitive and cost-effective AI solutions internally.

The adoption of MAI aligns with Microsoft's broader strategy to mitigate substantial costs associated with its extensive AI partnerships. Mustafa Suleyman, head of Microsoft's AI initiatives, has publicly stated the objective to reduce and eventually eliminate these significant expenses.

Microsoft's MAI model is already in use within GitHub Copilot. Furthermore, the company is developing its own transcription models, slated for deployment in services such as Microsoft Teams' video conferencing features in the coming months.
