Microsoft Advocates for AI Safety Regulations Similar to Appliances
Microsoft's leadership proposes that artificial intelligence (AI) should be subject to safety regulations comparable to those governing household appliances and food products.

Microsoft's leadership has suggested that the safety of artificial intelligence (AI) should be regulated in a manner similar to ordinary consumer goods like washing machines and milk cartons.
Microsoft President Brad Smith stated in an interview that washing machines currently face more safety regulations than AI. He emphasized that every carton of milk sold in a grocery store undergoes safety inspections, while AI's development and deployment proceed with less oversight.
Smith's remarks follow concerns raised by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. In a recent essay, Nadella warned that companies are granting AI too much leeway to perform tasks on behalf of humans without fully understanding its behavior, potentially leading to dangerous outcomes.
These positions align with a growing chorus of tech leaders calling for a slowdown in AI development. Recent incidents, including reports of AI models gaining unauthorized access to sensitive data or exhibiting unexpected behavior, have amplified concerns about potential risks.
