Microsoft and Mistral Expand AI Partnership in Europe

Microsoft and French AI company Mistral are significantly expanding their strategic partnership, the companies announced Tuesday. The new agreement aims to provide businesses and regulated industries with advanced AI solutions offering greater choice, control, and operational consistency.

As Mistral expands its AI computing capacity in Europe, Microsoft is committing to utilize a portion of this capacity. This will enable Mistral's efficient models to be available across Microsoft's broad AI platform. Customers can flexibly deploy these solutions in various environments, from cloud-based deployments to environments operating entirely offline.

As part of the partnership, Microsoft is investing several billion dollars in Mistral's new European GPU infrastructure. This investment supports the growing demand for Microsoft's Azure cloud services and enhances AI capabilities within Europe. Additionally, Mistral's models, such as Mistral Medium 3.5 and OCR 4, are being integrated into Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio, granting Microsoft customers worldwide access to these models' capabilities.

The companies state that the solutions combine Mistral's advanced AI models with Microsoft's security, compliance, and cloud platform offerings. The goal is to give businesses greater control over their AI deployments and data management, particularly in regulated markets that require high security and local data residency.

Microsoft Vice Chair Brad Smith highlighted that the partnership supports Europe's digital commitments and provides a trusted foundation for AI. Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch noted that the collaboration makes their models available globally to enterprises and public sector entities through a platform trusted even for the most demanding, regulated workloads.
