Microsoft created a full-scale airplane cabin mock-up as part of the development process for its Windows 11 "Shared Audio" feature. This testing approach aimed to replicate real-world usage scenarios more accurately than traditional lab environments.

Marcus Ash, Head of Design and Research at Microsoft, shared insights into the process on X. "A lot of design and research is rooted in getting as close to those real moments as possible," Ash stated. "By observing, simulating, and prototyping, we understand the scenarios behind the experience."

The cabin model was later transformed into a filming set to more visually demonstrate the development process. A demonstration showed twins, wearing Seattle Seahawks attire, synchronously watching a movie using the Shared Audio feature on a Surface Pro tablet.

The "Shared Audio" feature utilizes Bluetooth LE Audio technology, enabling system audio to be broadcast to two compatible devices simultaneously. Users can listen to the same audio content through headphones, speakers, or hearing aids. The feature is gradually rolling out to compatible devices and has received enhancements, including independent volume controls for two users and taskbar status indicators.
