Microsoft has canceled a partnership agreement with UK-based data center company Nscale, dealing a major blow to the firm's multi-billion dollar plans for an initial public offering (IPO). The move casts uncertainty over Nscale's future listing.
The tech giant was one of Nscale's two largest clients. The termination relates to Nscale's data center project in Loughton, Essex. Microsoft has not disclosed the reason for the termination, and neither company has responded to requests for comment.
Nscale filed for its IPO in the U.S. last month, aiming to list on the stock exchange. According to its prospectus, Microsoft and AI firm Anthropic were its primary clients. Nscale provides essential infrastructure, including computing power and data center facilities, necessary for training and operating artificial intelligence models.
Founded just two and a half years ago, Nscale experienced rapid growth. Its total contract value surged from $100 million to over $103 billion during that period. Competitors in the AI infrastructure space include CoreWeave, Nebius, Crusoe, and Lambda.
