Microsoft CEO Comments on Xbox Layoffs

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has voiced his approval of the ongoing restructuring efforts at Xbox, which include significant layoffs. "It is great to see the team doing some streamlining," Nadella stated in an interview on the Sources Podcast.

These comments follow a period of considerable workforce reduction within Xbox, initiated and led by Xbox President Asha Sharma. The company recently eliminated an additional 268 positions, adding to the 1,600 jobs cut earlier in the year. The restructuring has also involved consolidating multiple game studios and re-evaluating projects for key franchises like Halo.

Nadella discussed Xbox's positioning within Microsoft, asserting that the current direction is positive. He emphasized the need to establish a "sound and sustainable business model" to deliver games to a wider audience. Microsoft aims to excel as both a leading game publisher and a platform service provider across PC and its console hardware.

While Nadella's remarks might appear unsympathetic to those affected, Xbox leadership has defended the changes. Sharma has pointed to profitability gaps between Xbox and its peers in the gaming industry. With approximately three-quarters of planned layoffs completed, further adjustments are anticipated before the end of the fiscal year.
