Microsoft CEO Criticizes Anthropic's Fable AI Model Restrictions
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella called limits placed on Anthropic's Fable AI model "doesn't make sense" during an internal staff meeting, citing concerns overRestrictions.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has publicly criticized the restrictions imposed by partner Anthropic on its high-end Fable generative artificial intelligence model, stating during an internal meeting that the limitations "don't make sense."
The remarks from Nadella signal a broader trend among executives who are increasingly looking for cost-efficient AI models that do not exclusively come from the largest, most well-funded labs. This shift indicates a move towards utilizing models that can handle tasks like software development and other internal company functions without relying solely on frontier models.
Anthropic had announced efforts to reduce false positives for blocked requests with the introduction of its Fable 5 model in early June. However, the model experienced brief interruptions due to U.S. export control directives. The company noted that new safeguards might flag a slightly higher fraction of harmless requests than before.
These comments come from a key partner, as Microsoft has invested $5 billion in Anthropic and the startup has committed $30 billion to Microsoft's Azure cloud services. Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant for consumers and business workers also utilizes Anthropic's models, making Nadella's critique notable within their strategic relationship.
