Microsoft CEO Warns of AI Risks, Calls for Human Control and Broader Testing
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella issued an internal memo stressing that AI must remain under human control and undergo wider third-party testing due to escalating safety risks.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has released an internal memo cautioning against the rapid pace of artificial intelligence development and emphasizing the need for AI to remain under human control. Nadella highlighted the necessity for broader third-party testing and urged the company to dedicate sufficient time to ensuring technological safety, warning that development should not be rushed as risks escalate.
Nadella outlined three key focus areas for AI development: clear design objectives, ensuring customer control, and guaranteeing benefits for local communities. He stressed that AI should broadly benefit society and that developers must ensure customers can maintain control over their own data and learning cycles without dependence on any single model provider.
Concerns about AI risks have been voiced by several AI researchers and industry leaders. Earlier this week, Microsoft also published a 37-page draft of its principles for AI model behavior, emphasizing humanist principles and the secure deployment of the technology.
Nadella likened the pace of AI development to the pre-release testing phase of software. He stated that external and third-party testing is beneficial, adding that failure to manage risks properly could lead to a loss of operating licenses.
Microsoft aims to demonstrate its commitment to safe and responsible AI development through tangible actions. Nadella cited the company's Quincy Data Center operations as an example of long-term collaboration with communities to build infrastructure and distribute benefits.
