Microsoft Copilot Implements Usage-Based Pricing

Microsoft has transitioned key features of its Copilot AI service to a usage-based pricing model, effective late September. While chat functions and basic Copilot access within applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams remain on a flat per-user license, more advanced automation capabilities are now billed per usage through Copilot Credits.

The shift impacts features such as Cowork, Code, and Autopilot, which handle more complex, long-running tasks. These agent-like functions are now charged at approximately $0.01 per credit used. This move signifies a change in how businesses budget for and consume AI-driven automation, moving from predictable seat licenses to variable consumption costs for deep automation.

Companies must now establish clear internal policies on who bears the cost of AI usage. While IT departments typically manage the overall system and budget caps, individual departments, including marketing, are increasingly expected to manage their own usage budgets. Failure to clarify these responsibilities can lead to budget shortfalls and hinder AI adoption momentum mid-year.

Experts advise that understanding the new cost structure is crucial for responsible budget management. The focus shifts from simply acquiring licenses to actively monitoring and allocating funds for AI consumption. This requires proactive planning to ensure that the adoption of advanced AI automation does not stall due to unforeseen costs.
