Microsoft Denies Reports of 20% Cloud Cuts to Offset AI Spending

Microsoft has denied reports suggesting the tech giant is considering substantial cuts to its cloud division to compensate for increased artificial intelligence spending. The original report, citing sources, stated that Girish Bablani, president of Microsoft Azure Core, had directed leaders to develop plans for at least a 20% cost reduction.

These potential cuts were reportedly aimed at offsetting significant investments in AI data centers and freeing up funds for talent acquisition. One possibility mentioned was the reduction of external contractor roles. However, a Microsoft spokesperson called the report "inaccurate and careless," stating that Azure leadership has not ordered managers to identify potential cuts.

"Azure leadership has not directed teams to develop cost-cutting plans," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "Every responsible company prepares for a range of scenarios and market dynamics, both positive and negative." The company indicated that preparing for various scenarios is standard business practice.

The surge in AI adoption has compelled tech companies to invest heavily in data center infrastructure. Microsoft's capital expenditures, including data center costs, reached $145.3 billion in its fiscal year 2026. In the quarter ending June, these expenditures were $41 billion, a 69% increase year-over-year. Competitors like Amazon Web Services and Oracle have also made workforce reductions to fund AI initiatives.
