Microsoft details development of magnetic USB-C interface
Microsoft engineers refined the magnetic USB-C port on the Surface Laptop Ultra by shifting magnet placement by 0.7 millimeters to ensure seamless alignment.
Microsoft has disclosed technical details regarding the development of the magnetic USB-C interface featured in its latest Surface devices. According to Marcus Ash, head of Windows + Devices, the engineering team went through approximately 300 iterations to perfect the interface while maintaining compatibility with standard USB-C cables.
The most significant design change involved a 0.7-millimeter shift in magnet positioning. This adjustment alters the alignment path, allowing the connector to be pulled into position automatically when in close proximity. This change reduces the manual effort required to secure a connection, providing a tactile experience distinct from standard port designs.
To ensure durability, the hardware underwent extensive testing, including thousands of insertion cycles and simulations of cable tension and misuse. The final design integrates audio and LED feedback to confirm a successful connection, intended to provide users with clear confirmation that the device is charging.
