Microsoft Directs Developers to Prioritize OpenAI Models
Microsoft has issued a new directive for developers working on AI programming projects, requiring them to prioritize OpenAI's flagship models. This move aims to enhance the efficiency of AI resource utilization.
Microsoft is directing developers involved in its AI programming projects to make OpenAI's flagship models their preferred choice. The directive, communicated in an internal memo by Keith Kramer, Executive Vice President of the CoreAI Engineering team, aims to improve the efficiency of AI resource utilization.
While Microsoft develops its own AI programming models and offers cloud service customers access to over 11,000 models, including those from Anthropic, the company wishes to leverage the intellectual property gained from its early investment in OpenAI. Kramer's CoreAI team oversees products such as GitHub, Visual Studio, and Visual Studio Code.
Employees are instructed to use OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo model as the default option when utilizing GitHub Copilot and to continue its use in most scenarios. Microsoft stated that it regularly adjusts default model settings for its internal tools to balance performance and resource efficiency.
A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo is the default model for internal GitHub Copilot usage, adding that various other models remain available for engineers to select. The company's latest disclosures reveal that a substantial portion of its AI business revenue comes from its long-term partner, OpenAI, with revenues reaching $24.1 billion from OpenAI in the fiscal year ending June.
