Microsoft explains removal of drag-and-drop taskbar in Windows 11 26H2

Microsoft has confirmed that users can no longer drag the Windows 11 26H2 taskbar to relocate it. The company cites concerns over accidental inputs as the primary driver for this design change.

Microsoft has clarified the reasoning behind the inability to manually drag the taskbar to different screen edges in the Windows 11 26H2 update. Instead of the free-form movement available in previous versions, users must now use the system settings menu to adjust the taskbar's orientation.

Diego Baca, Vice President of Design at Microsoft, explained that the change is a deliberate design choice aimed at reducing accidental inputs. Internal research conducted by the company indicated that users often moved the taskbar unintentionally when dragging was enabled. This issue was a primary reason for the inclusion of the 'lock taskbar' feature in earlier iterations of the Windows operating system.

Furthermore, Microsoft noted that changing the taskbar position is a low-frequency action for most users. Consequently, the company determined that formalizing the process within the settings application provides a more intuitive and less prone-to-error experience than allowing direct manipulation via the cursor.
