Microsoft Fixes Windows 11 File History Bug After September Update

Microsoft has issued a corrective update to address a malfunction in Windows 11's File History feature, stemming from the cumulative update KB5124008 released in September. The original update aimed to resolve numerous vulnerabilities in Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2.

Following the installation of the September update, users reported experiencing problems with the File History function, which is designed to back up different versions of files. A common symptom was an erroneous prompt to "reconnect the drive" when attempting to access backup storage, even though the physical backup drive was functioning correctly.

File History serves as a built-in Windows tool for creating periodic backups of user libraries, including documents, pictures, and videos. It allows users to browse historical versions of files and restore them to a specific point in time, which is crucial for recovering from accidental deletions or modifications.

Microsoft also acknowledged that the "Last backup" timestamp within File History might have displayed incorrect or outdated information, leading to an inaccurate file backup timeline. The company stated that this issue has been resolved in the optional update KB5124010, which became available on September 22.
