Microsoft Research has launched Project Quine, an experimental multimodal AI research system aimed at accelerating biological research and drug discovery. The system seeks to bridge computational biology modeling with practical laboratory experiments.

Project Quine constructs a "world model" encompassing genomics, proteins, chemistry, cell states, and bioimaging, integrated with an interactive reasoning framework. This development is a collaboration between Microsoft Research and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.

The system's ability to process information across multiple biological domains simultaneously allows for comprehensive cross-model analysis. This could potentially overcome bottlenecks in traditional drug discovery, enabling researchers to computationally pre-screen candidates before dedicating limited lab resources.

Microsoft emphasizes that Project Quine is currently for research use only and not for clinical applications. All findings from the system require rigorous human evaluation to ensure accuracy, as AI can still produce errors.

In recent tests on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cell lines, Project Quine successfully prioritized compounds that induced expected cell state transitions and identified unexpected phenotypic responses within a weekend. Microsoft plans to expand access through products like Microsoft Discovery in the future.
