Microsoft plans modernization of Windows 11 drive optimization tool
Microsoft has confirmed it is planning to update its legacy drive optimization utility for Windows 11 following feedback regarding its outdated design.
Microsoft is preparing to modernize its built-in drive optimization tool for Windows 11. The company's design lead, March Rogers, confirmed in a social media exchange that the utility, which has remained largely unchanged since the release of Windows 8, is now part of the development roadmap.
The tool is responsible for performing maintenance tasks such as disk defragmentation for HDDs and TRIM operations for SSDs. Over the years, users have frequently cited the utility’s interface as a point of inconsistency compared to the rest of the Windows 11 design language.
Suggestions from the community include rebuilding the tool using WinUI 3 or moving its functionality directly into the Windows Settings application. These discussions prompted the acknowledgment from Microsoft leadership that improvements are being considered.
While Microsoft has confirmed the inclusion of the tool in its modernization plans, the company has yet to provide a specific release date or disclose technical details regarding the upcoming changes.
