Microsoft Redesigns Copilot Icon for Dynamic Interaction
Microsoft has updated the icon for its Copilot AI assistant, transforming it from a static symbol into a dynamic system of two moving squares. The redesign aims to better represent the assistant's various functions and states.
Microsoft has redesigned the icon for its Copilot AI assistant, shifting from a static design to a dynamic system composed of two interactive squares. This change, detailed on the Microsoft Design blog, seeks to improve user understanding by visually representing the assistant's operational states.
The new icon features two distinct squares that can reposition themselves and combine to form a unified shape. According to Microsoft's design team, the evolution of Copilot's use cases necessitated a more expressive visual. The previous static icon struggled to convey processing states, prompting the team to integrate the icon more directly into the product's interaction flow.
Extensive testing was conducted on various proportions, angles, and spacing to achieve a design where the squares are recognizable both individually and when combined. The icon retains its gradient color scheme, with colors capable of flowing between the two forms to create depth. Different color palettes were also evaluated for various applications, including screens and print.
Microsoft has established a unified dynamic language for the icon, employing three distinct animations based on the movement of the two squares. The first animation signifies 'thinking,' corresponding to Copilot processing a user's request. The second animation represents 'planning,' as the system organizes subsequent steps. The third animation illustrates 'retrieval,' depicting Copilot extracting relevant information from files and work content.
