Microsoft has released new Administrative Templates (ADMX) for the Windows 11 26H2 update, aiming to streamline the configuration and management process for enterprise IT administrators. The tools allow IT departments to test existing Group Policy configurations and manage new or modified policies before deploying the latest Windows version.
The Administrative Templates, version 1.0, are provided as an MSI package and contain the complete management templates for Windows 11 26H2. Administrators can load these templates into Group Policy tools to configure registry-based Windows policies. A companion Group Policy Settings Reference Spreadsheet is also available, detailing all computer and user configuration policies included in the ADMX files, which aids in quick policy searching.
ADMX files are essentially XML files that describe Windows Group Policy settings, including information on corresponding registry keys and values. Once installed, these settings appear in management tools like the Group Policy Management Editor, enabling administrators to configure enterprise devices uniformly through a graphical interface.
Microsoft advises that the ADMX download package is primarily intended for Central Store scenarios in domain environments and recommends against directly replacing the PolicyDefinitions files in the local Windows directory. For organizations using Mobile Device Management (MDM), ADMX-backed policies can be managed without traditional Group Policy infrastructure through Microsoft's Policy CSP solutions.
The Windows 11 26H2 update also introduces other enterprise management and security features, such as Administrator Protection for enhanced privilege management and built-in Sysmon for threat detection. The Smart App Control feature has also been adjusted to allow direct activation or deactivation without requiring a clean Windows installation. These new resources empower IT administrators to better manage and secure their corporate environments.
