Microsoft Removes Classic Windows Media Player Themes Ahead of Schedule

Microsoft has removed support for classic themes in Windows Media Player Legacy (WMPL) ahead of its initially planned discontinuation. The feature, which was slated to cease support on November 10, 2026, has reportedly stopped working for users.

According to NeoWin, the classic skin functionality is no longer supported, and the application now defaults to its standard interface upon launch. Microsoft had previously announced that WMPL's skin support would be deprecated in Windows 11 versions 24H2 and later, starting November 10, 2026.

The move has caused disappointment among users who have relied on WMPL for its customization options. The player, a staple since the Windows 2000 and Windows Me eras, was appreciated for its lightweight nature and theme support. Despite numerous alternative media players available, many users favored WMPL's simplicity and aesthetic flexibility.

This early removal of WMPL themes aligns with Microsoft's broader strategy of deprecating legacy components within Windows. Previously, the company confirmed the removal of several Windows Deployment Services (WDS) components from future Windows Server releases.

Microsoft has not provided a specific explanation for the premature deactivation of the theme support. It remains unclear if this is due to a phased rollout, a change in specific system versions, or a software update behavior. The company has yet to issue further statements on the early discontinuation.
