Microsoft Restructures Reporting Segments for AI Era

Microsoft is set to overhaul its financial reporting structure with the introduction of two new segments, replacing the current three. As of the next fiscal quarter, Productivity and Business Processes, Intelligent Cloud, and More Personal Computing will be consolidated into Devices and Consumer, and Agents and Infra.

The Devices and Consumer segment will encompass revenue from customer-facing products such as Xbox and Windows devices, alongside income from LinkedIn and search advertising. The newly formed Agents and Infra segment will serve as a broader category, collecting revenue from other Microsoft products, including its AI models, cloud infrastructure, and Microsoft 365, which incorporates its Copilot features. This restructuring also signifies that Microsoft will begin disclosing quarterly revenue for its Azure cloud-computing platform.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that the shift in reporting structure is intended to mirror how artificial intelligence is reshaping the company's operations. "There’s no question AI represents a profound shift in both technology and business," Nadella commented. "To reflect this and provide increased transparency to investors, we are updating our financial reporting to mirror how the business is operating, how we allocate resources, and where we are headed."

Nadella further explained that the integrated architecture within Agents and Infra is key to how Microsoft engages with customers and drives outcomes. "It's no longer about building or selling one app or service, but about connecting the entire trajectory of a ‘job to be done’." The naming convention for the new segments has drawn attention for its distinctiveness.
