Microsoft to Process M365 Copilot Data in Germany from Late 2026
Microsoft will begin processing data for its M365 Copilot service exclusively within German data centers starting in late 2026. This move aims to enhance digital sovereignty for customers, particularly in regulated sectors.

Microsoft announced that data processed by its Microsoft 365 Copilot AI service will be handled exclusively within German data centers starting from the end of 2026. This initiative is designed to address growing demands for data sovereignty, especially from public sector entities and highly regulated industries.
The company plans to extend this localized data processing capability to eleven additional countries in 2026, including Poland and Italy, with specific launch dates to be announced. By keeping data within national borders, Microsoft aims to help customers comply with local data protection laws and potentially reduce service latency.
Further bolstering digital sovereignty, Microsoft is introducing new cloud functionalities. An offline capability for Azure Local is slated for early 2026, allowing for centralized management of local Azure clusters and independent operation within private cloud environments. Additionally, a "Digital Sovereignty Specialization" program for Microsoft partners will certify their ability to offer sovereign cloud solutions on Azure and Microsoft 365 platforms that meet stringent regulatory requirements.
Agnes Heftberger, CEO of Microsoft Germany, expressed satisfaction with the development of new AI applications that boost productivity. She highlighted Microsoft's long-standing role as a partner in Germany's innovation ecosystem. The company's AI Tour event in Frankfurt was expected to draw approximately 3,000 attendees for presentations and workshops on AI solutions.
