Microsoft to Remove Two Copilot Features from Consumer App in August
Microsoft plans to remove the Deep Research and Podcasts AI agents from its consumer-facing Copilot application on August 18. These features have been available for approximately 16 months.
Microsoft is set to remove two AI features, Deep Research and Podcasts, from its consumer Copilot application on August 18. These agents have been active for about 16 months.
The Deep Research feature provided AI-assisted research capabilities, automatically retrieving and synthesizing information from multiple online sources to generate structured reports with citations. Microsoft stated that some of its functionality has been integrated into the Researcher agent. Users will still be able to access previously generated reports via Copilot's chat history after the August 18 removal.
The Podcasts agent transformed user-uploaded content into audio podcasts featuring conversations between two AI hosts. Following the August 18 discontinuation, users will no longer be able to access previously created podcast content. These audio files cannot be exported or saved outside the Copilot application, and any previously shared podcast links will become invalid.
Microsoft initially launched the Deep Research and Podcasts agents in April 2025 as part of an expansion of Copilot features, coinciding with the company's 50th anniversary. The removal suggests Microsoft is continually assessing the performance and resource allocation for its various Copilot services.
