Microsoft Veteran Advises Against Multiple Antivirus Programs on Windows 11

Raymond Chen, a Microsoft employee of over 30 years, recommends Windows 11 users avoid installing more than one antivirus program due to potential conflicts and system instability.

Raymond Chen, a veteran Microsoft employee with over three decades of experience, has advised Windows 11 users against installing multiple antivirus programs simultaneously. Chen explained that running two or more security applications concurrently can lead to conflicts between the software, potentially causing system errors and instability.

Chen's observations stem from investigating a system failure for a colleague, where he found two antivirus programs in conflict. One program attempted to quarantine a process, and the second program successfully did the same, leading to the system malfunction. "Installing two antimalware programs on the same computer is like hiring two security companies to patrol the same building," Chen stated, illustrating the redundancy and potential for interference.

This issue is not exclusive to Microsoft Defender but affects all antivirus software. Chen emphasized that these programs lack awareness of each other's presence and may interpret each other's legitimate system activities as malicious. Simply adding them to an exception list is insufficient, as the software monitors all processes at the system level.

Furthermore, Chen warned that third-party antivirus solutions might employ techniques not officially recommended or supported by Microsoft, such as intercepting and redirecting system function calls. This practice can result in significant performance degradation and application freezes, as the antivirus program interferes with standard system operations.

The core recommendation is to utilize a single, reliable antivirus solution that is compatible with the operating system. Microsoft's integrated Defender is generally considered a secure and efficient option for users who do not opt for additional third-party security software.
