Microsoft is testing a new adaptive sleep strategy in its Windows 11 Insider Preview builds. This feature aims to improve battery performance and wake-up times on laptops by intelligently adjusting when the device enters deep sleep based on its current battery level.

Previously, Windows used Modern Standby (S0 low power mode), which allows for quick wake-ups similar to smartphones. However, this mode keeps certain background processes and Wi-Fi active, consuming more power than traditional S3 sleep or S4 hibernation.

The adaptive sleep strategy, currently in controlled rollout for Insider Build 28120.2630, will modify this behavior. For example, when the battery is above 80%, the system may avoid deep sleep for faster instant wake-ups. Conversely, when the battery is low, it will enter sleep earlier to prevent the device from draining completely while closed.

This functionality is expected to arrive in the stable version of Windows 11 several months from now. Microsoft has previously made adjustments to Modern Standby, such as limiting background activity and preventing unexpected device wake-ups, to enhance power efficiency. The company's approach now appears to be moving towards a more nuanced power management system.
