Microsoft Windows 10 Update Fixes File History Backup Glitch

Microsoft released its October extended security update for Windows 10, addressing multiple issues including a critical File History backup failure.

14 October 2026

Microsoft issued the October 2024 Extended Security Update (ESU) for Windows 10, KB5126657, on October 13. This update targets Windows 10 versions 22H2 (build 19045.7807) and 21H2 (build 19044.7807), aiming to resolve several functional problems.

The most significant fix addresses a critical failure in the File History feature. Previously, File History would fail during backup or restore operations to external drives or network locations, often displaying an erroneous "Reconnect drive" prompt even when the drive was properly connected. This issue caused backups to silently stop working.

The update also resolves a problem where certain Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) virtual disks would remain offline after a Windows update reboot. This occurred due to an incorrect assessment of metadata during the recovery process. Additionally, the update introduces audit capabilities for ReFS file system volumes on external storage devices.

Minor changes include the permanent enablement of daylight saving time for certain Canadian provinces and the addition of a new time zone for Manitoba. Microsoft also continues its ongoing distribution of new Secure Boot certificates to eligible devices, a process expected to continue until 2026.
