Microsoft is preparing to roll out enhanced privacy controls for Win32 applications within Windows 11. The upcoming feature, identified in Windows 11 preview build 26340.9212 on the Experimental channel, aims to provide users with more specific control over application permissions, mirroring the detailed settings found on mobile operating systems.

Currently, Windows 11 allows users to manage permissions for apps installed via the Microsoft Store individually. However, traditional desktop applications, known as Win32 apps, have had their permissions bundled under broader settings. This means granting microphone access to one Win32 app, such as Discord, would inadvertently grant the same access to other Win32 applications like web browsers, without a specific user choice for each.

The new system, as observed by testers, will enable users to revoke specific permissions, such as camera, microphone, location, and voice activation, for individual Win32 applications. This granular control empowers users to better manage which applications can access sensitive data on their devices.

This development signifies a move towards more consistent and user-centric privacy management across different application types within Windows. The feature is currently undergoing testing with select members of the Windows Insider Program and is expected to be included in a future public release of Windows 11.
