Microsoft X Account Briefly Hijacked for Crypto Token Promotion

Microsoft's official X account was compromised for approximately 30 minutes, during which attackers posted messages promoting a cryptocurrency token by claiming Clippy's return.

3 October 2026

Microsoft's official X account, followed by over 13 million users, was temporarily hijacked on October 3. Attackers used the platform to post a message suggesting the return of the popular Clippy assistant if a specific post garnered 500,000 likes. This action was intended to promote a cryptocurrency token known as "$Clippy."

The unauthorized access lasted for about 30 minutes. During this period, the attackers also briefly changed Microsoft's profile picture to an image of Clippy, aiming to enhance the deception. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the unauthorized access and stated that the account has since been secured and the offending posts removed. The company is continuing its investigation into the incident.

The hack appears to be linked to the marketing efforts of a specific cryptocurrency. By leveraging the well-known Clippy character, the attackers sought to create a false impression of official endorsement from Microsoft for the new token. Microsoft has since issued statements clarifying that it does not support or endorse any cryptocurrency tokens related to Clippy, Microsoft, or the ticker $MSFT.

The company has indicated its intention to take legal action to have the related content removed. The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges on social media platforms and the methods used to spread misinformation, particularly concerning digital assets.
