Microsoft is testing a new "disc-to-digital" feature with members of its Xbox Insiders program, allowing players to convert physical game discs they own into digital versions. The internal codename for this feature is Positron.

The testing is currently available to participants in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead Insider rings. Players can insert a compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X physical game disc into their Xbox Series X console. After installing and launching the game, the system will grant a digital entitlement, enabling the game to be played without the disc.

Microsoft states this functionality is part of efforts to preserve games and prepare for future Xbox consoles. The digital entitlement is not permanently tied to the original owner. If the disc is sold or lent, the new holder will receive the digital entitlement upon first installation, and the original owner's entitlement will be suspended until the disc is retrieved or the game is repurchased.

A total of 174 games are currently compatible with the disc-to-digital feature, including titles like "007 Legends" and "Alan Wake 2." Xbox Play Anywhere titles that are digitally converted can also be played on devices like the Xbox All-On-The-Go and streamed via Xbox Cloud Gaming.
