Xbox CEO Ashar Sharma, in an internal memo, highlighted the rapid advancements in AI-assisted game modification and recompilation, which are challenging conventional boundaries in game development. Recent examples include using AI models to integrate content from different games or adapt titles for new platforms, such as web browsers.
The XBOX Labs team will be led by Xbox CTO Scott Van Vleet and will comprise game developers, engineers, and scientists. Their objective is to translate emerging technologies and ideas into tangible outcomes for both players and developers. Microsoft plans to openly share the development tools and findings from this venture.
Sharma acknowledged that these changes might disrupt existing business models but emphasized that they could ultimately benefit players by enhancing game accessibility and fostering new avenues for creation. The team's work is intended to complement Xbox's ongoing strategic focus and core operations.
