Microsoft's WhatsApp Feature for Windows 11 Faces Speed and Memory Issues
Microsoft has rolled out its "Cross-device Resume" feature for WhatsApp on Windows 11, allowing users to continue chats from their phones on their PCs. However, the feature is reportedly slow and resource-intensive.
Microsoft is now fully deploying its "Cross-device Resume" functionality within the WhatsApp application for Windows 11. This feature aims to bridge the gap between mobile and desktop experiences by allowing users to seamlessly continue WhatsApp conversations started on their Android phones directly on their Windows 11 PCs.
The functionality mirrors Apple's Handoff feature. When a user receives a WhatsApp message on their Android phone, a prompt will appear on the Windows 11 taskbar. Clicking this prompt is intended to open the specific chat conversation directly on the PC.
However, early testing indicates significant performance issues. Reports suggest considerable delays, often several seconds, before the chat interface fully loads and becomes usable on the computer. This lag time may render the feature impractical for quick replies, as users might find it faster to simply pick up their phone.
Speculation points to the WhatsApp UWP app's reliance on WebView2 technology as a potential cause for the performance drawbacks. This setup involves running the web.whatsapp.com interface within a Chromium container, which has previously been observed to consume substantial system resources, reportedly nearing 1.2GB of RAM during testing.
