Microsoft's Xbox consoles have commenced internal testing of a new "disc-to-digital" feature. Sources indicate this functionality aims to allow players to convert their physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs into digital copies.

References to "enable Disc2Digital" were found in the Xbox PC app's code in May, suggesting development has been underway. While the feature is reportedly limited to Xbox One and Series X discs, excluding older consoles like Xbox 360 or the original Xbox, it could facilitate a player's transition to digital gaming without repurchasing their entire physical library.

The introduction of this feature may signal Microsoft's continued strategic shift towards digital game distribution. This move aligns with industry trends, as Sony has previously announced the cessation of physical disc production for its PlayStation 5 console.
