Midea Building Technologies has provided a breakdown of air conditioner power consumption and offered advice on reducing energy costs. The company notes that the wattage consumed by air conditioners varies significantly based on the unit's type, size, and efficiency rating. Residential units typically range from 1,000 to 3,500 watts while in operation.

Older models tend to be less energy-efficient, consuming more power than modern inverter systems that adjust their output to save energy. Smaller window or portable air conditioners generally use less than 1,500 watts, whereas larger central air conditioning systems require considerably more. Factors such as room size, insulation quality, external temperature, and thermostat settings also play a crucial role in actual energy usage.

The company highlighted several key factors influencing an AC unit's power draw. Energy efficiency ratings like SEER or EER, inverter technology, and energy-saving certifications on newer units mean they use fewer watts for equivalent cooling. Good insulation and well-sealed windows reduce heat gain, subsequently shortening the AC's run time. Adjusting the thermostat lower by each degree can increase energy consumption by approximately 6% to 8%.

Additionally, selecting the correct unit size is vital; an oversized or undersized system will operate inefficiently and consume more power. Neglecting maintenance, such as cleaning or replacing air filters, can increase energy consumption by up to 15%, especially during peak usage. High outdoor temperatures also force the system to work harder, leading to higher wattage consumption.

Midea also provided cost estimates, illustrating that a 1-ton air conditioner running at 1,000 watts for one hour consumes 1 kWh. An estimate for 8 hours of daily operation over 30 days suggests a monthly consumption of 240 kWh. At an average electricity rate of MXN 1.2 per kWh, this would result in approximately MXN 288 per month, though actual costs will vary based on specific usage and local rates.

To reduce energy usage without sacrificing comfort, Midea recommends regular filter cleaning or replacement, setting the thermostat appropriately, and utilizing timer functions to optimize operation.
