Midea to transition PortaSplit air conditioners to R290 by 2027
Midea is updating its PortaSplit line to comply with EU F-gas regulations by switching to propane. The next generation of units is scheduled for release in 2027.
Midea Building Technologies is transitioning its PortaSplit mobile air conditioning units to R290 (propane) as the primary refrigerant, replacing the current R32. The update is designed to align the product line with the EU’s evolving F-gas regulations, which introduce stricter controls on synthetic refrigerants starting January 1, 2027.
While R32 carries a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675, R290 offers a significantly lower GWP of 0.02, making it a more environmentally sustainable choice. The company clarified that R32 units placed on the EU market before the 2027 deadline may continue to be sold and utilized without restrictions.
The upcoming generation of the PortaSplit will feature several design improvements, including a removable condensate water filter, upgraded drainage options for the outdoor unit, and a new radio chip supporting the Matter 1.6 smart home standard.
Midea plans to release the new R290-compatible units across Europe in 2027 as it discontinues production of the R32 series.
