Migraine Drives Significant Economic Losses and Lost Productivity in Germany

Migraine is causing an estimated 1.22 billion lost work hours in Germany each year, translating into a potential economic burden of 100 billion euros. This stark reality, detailed in a study by the WifOR economic research institute, underscores the urgent need for improved care and support for individuals suffering from the neurological condition.

The study, "The socioeconomic burden of migraine," indicates that a substantial improvement in the management and treatment of migraine patients could unlock significant economic potential for Germany. Beyond lost productivity, the condition is linked to other health issues, including a doubled risk of depression among sufferers, highlighting the multifaceted impact on quality of life.

Migraine affects up to 15.5 million people in Germany, with an estimated 40% remaining undiagnosed. The economic fallout stems from absenteeism, reduced work capacity, and indirect consequences of the disease. The research points out that women are disproportionately affected, and a significant portion of their lost work time involves unpaid labor such as caregiving and volunteer activities, which are not always captured in traditional economic statistics.

While the precise causes and triggers of migraine remain under investigation, research has identified the neuropeptide CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide) as playing a role in its development and pain signaling. These findings have paved the way for the development of CGRP antibodies, the first class of drugs specifically designed for migraine prevention, offering a targeted therapeutic option for those with frequent and severe attacks unresponsive to other treatments.
