Millions of Migratory Birds Traverse Bavaria

Millions of migratory birds are currently crossing Bavaria as they depart from their breeding grounds. In early October, an estimated 50 million birds are heading towards wintering sites in Southern Europe and Africa, with an additional 300 million birds from the north using Bavaria as a transit and resting area.

The Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz in Bayern (LBV) is inviting the public to participate in the EuroBirdWatch event from October 2nd to 4th. This initiative aims to observe and count migrating birds. Dr. Angelika Nelson, an LBV bird expert, highlights that these observations help scientists track changes in migratory routes and timing, which can be influenced by factors such as climate change and habitat loss.

Throughout Bavaria, the LBV is organizing numerous guided tours and events where participants can collectively observe and identify various migratory species. These gatherings provide an opportunity for the public to engage with nature and learn about the phenomenon of bird migration.

Birds employ diverse strategies for migration. Some species, like the cuckoo and the white stork, possess an innate sense of direction and an inherited migratory route. Young geese, however, learn their routes and resting spots from their parents. Short-distance migrants winter in the Mediterranean region or Western Europe, while long-distance migrants journey as far south as sub-Saharan Africa.
