Minesto and Morteza Capital partner to develop tidal energy in the Maldives
Swedish ocean energy developer Minesto has signed a memorandum of understanding with Morteza Capital to deploy commercial tidal power projects in the Maldives.
Minesto and Morteza Capital have formalized an agreement to pursue the commercial deployment of tidal energy systems in the Maldives. The collaboration leverages Minesto's proprietary marine energy technology alongside Morteza Capital's project development capabilities and regional reach.
The Maldives currently relies heavily on imported fossil fuels for electricity generation. The partnership aims to provide an alternative, predictable renewable energy source by harvesting the archipelago's ocean currents. This initiative aligns with the nation’s goals to decrease dependence on external energy sources.
While tidal energy remains a nascent industry compared to solar or wind, the move represents a push toward diversifying renewable portfolios. The parties will now focus on the planning phases to assess the feasibility of installing and operating tidal turbines within the Maldivian jurisdiction.
