Mistral CEO: U.S. AI safety debate masks competitors' negligence

Mistral AI CEO Arthur Mensch has accused leading global artificial intelligence companies of using the debate over the technology's safety as a cover-up for their "negligence." "The debate that we’ve seen in the U.S. has been a cover for the negligence of some of our competitors," Mensch told CNBC, adding that it is necessary to create systems capable of containing AI agents.

Mensch's comments come as some major players in the AI field have voiced concerns about the technology's potential risks. OpenAI recently decided not to release an upcoming model due to safety concerns, and Anthropic has warned potential investors about the technology's existential risks, advocating for a slower pace of development.

Mistral AI, however, is taking a different approach and has no plans to slow its development. "The lead that U.S. labs have is not extremely large," Mensch stated, expressing confidence that his company's next-generation model will "very significantly" close the gap with leading U.S. AI labs. The company recently raised 3 billion euros in funding.

Unlike its competitors, Mistral AI focuses on developing customized AI tools for businesses. "When you give them a lot of tools, those systems [AI agents] are very dynamic, so they can go and do things that you do not expect," Mensch said. He emphasized the need for proper monitoring, which Mistral AI provides to its enterprise clients.
