Software engineer Eric Lu has launched a new font solution designed to challenge artificial intelligence. Dubbed Ghost Font, the dynamic typographic tool generates moving video text intended to be human-readable but difficult for AI models and static screenshots to interpret.
Lu, who founded font tools company Mixfont in 2016, has been exploring the intersection of AI and typography. Ghost Font utilizes thousands of small dots forming words in motion. Lu tested the tool against leading models like Claude Fable and GPT Sol 5.6 Ultra, which initially struggled to decipher it.
A practical application for Ghost Font could be enhancing CAPTCHA systems, where AI has become adept at recognizing static images. Introducing motion makes it harder for automated bots to solve challenges while remaining legible for humans.
While Ghost Font represents an adversarial approach to AI, Mixfont's other tools, serving over 10,000 daily users, focus on leveraging AI within typography. Users can convert their own handwriting or fonts captured in photos into TTF files or generate typefaces using text prompts.
Lu acknowledges a "love-hate relationship" with AI but believes in its potential to boost creativity and simplify tasks. Mixfont also allows users to sell their font creations.
