Modi Calls for Global Standards to Identify AI-Generated Content Origin

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for global standards and common rules for emerging technologies, suggesting mechanisms to identify the origin of deepfakes and AI-generated content.

7 October 2026

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged the establishment of global standards and common rules for emerging technologies. He proposed exploring mechanisms that would allow users to immediately identify the origin of deepfakes and AI-generated content. The remarks were made during a meeting with the board members of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) in Delhi.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Modi emphasized the need for clear identification of AI-generated and deepfake content, stating that the digital future must expand opportunity while strengthening trust. He also highlighted that cyber fraud requires technology-driven solutions and suggested sustained awareness campaigns to warn users about fraudulent calls. Additionally, he advocated for affordable digital services for the Global South, describing Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) as a "springboard" for developing countries.

India's amendments to its Information Technology (IT) Rules in February 2026 require platforms offering AI content tools to embed permanent metadata or other provenance mechanisms in synthetic content, to the extent technically feasible. This metadata must include a unique identifier for the platform tool used to create or alter the content, and platforms are prohibited from allowing users to remove it.

Modi has previously called for global AI rules. At the G20 Leaders' Summit in November 2023, he stated that India firmly believes in working together on global regulation of AI and emphasized the dangers of deepfakes for society and individuals.
