Mohawk Industries Reports Net Loss Following Large Impairment Charges
Mohawk Industries recorded a $760 million net loss in the third quarter, driven by $876 million in impairment charges. Net sales fell 5.2% to $2.8 billion as high interest rates dampened demand.

Mohawk Industries reported a third-quarter net loss of $760 million, primarily resulting from $876 million in non-cash impairment charges. The company attributed the writedowns to unfavorable macroeconomic conditions and increased discount rates, which necessitated a revaluation of goodwill and intangible assets.
Net sales for the period totaled $2.8 billion, a 5.2% decline from the previous year. CEO Jeff Lorberbaum stated that results aligned with internal expectations, noting that residential investment constraints and reduced consumer discretionary spending continue to pressure the business. High mortgage rates in the U.S. and inflation-driven uncertainty in Europe have led to the postponement of large-scale flooring projects, which are often deferrable purchases.
In response to the market slowdown, Mohawk Industries is initiating restructuring efforts, including closing legacy ceramic production in Italy and optimizing rigid LVT production in the U.S. These moves are projected to generate $30 million in annual savings through improved productivity and lowered manufacturing costs. The company also continues to invest in new production capacity for insulation and premium laminate projects scheduled to come online through 2024.
Despite the losses, the company maintained a strong cash position, reporting $385 million in free cash flow for the quarter. Management is focused on cost control and volume optimization until a recovery in the housing sector takes hold.
