Molicel Introduces New Battery Cell Technology Amid Hybrid Vehicle Demand Growth

Battery component manufacturer Molicel has introduced its next-generation INR-21700-P70X cell technology, aimed at supporting the growing needs of hybrid and electric vehicles. The company presented the new technology at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference (AABC) Europe 2026. The new cell is engineered to bridge the gap between the energy density of traditional lithium-ion batteries and the rapid responsiveness of supercapacitors.
Market trends indicate a global surge in hybrid vehicle demand, as the growth of fully electric vehicles (BEV) moderates. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has noted a shift by manufacturers towards prioritizing hybrids, with significant increases in market share reported in the US and Europe. Molicel's new cell features a 7000 mAh capacity and a 30C continuous discharge capability to address these market dynamics.
The INR-21700-P70X cell is capable of delivering a 900W peak power for 5 seconds, enabling rapid acceleration and efficient regenerative braking. It also achieves a power switching time of under 200 microseconds for high-power output, mimicking supercapacitor performance. Molicel states this speed helps in handling high-frequency power pulses without performance degradation.
Molicel also highlighted the safety and durability features of its new cell technology. It has passed the UL9540A thermal runaway evaluation, a critical safety benchmark for energy storage systems. The company claims its advanced technology reduces exothermic heat release and delays thermal spread in the event of a failure. Furthermore, in tests simulating the rapid, shallow charge/discharge cycles common in hybrids, the PX series cell retained 96% of its capacity after 1,000,000 cycles. This durability is intended to ensure a long lifespan for the battery powertrain and alleviate warranty concerns for automakers, positioning Molicel's technology as a key enabler for the global hybrid transition.
