Molicel releases next-gen battery tech amid hybrid vehicle demand

Molicel, a company specializing in high-power battery cells, has introduced its next-generation PX-series battery technology. The new INR-21700-P70X model was presented at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference (AABC) Europe 2026. This technology is positioned to address the increasing global demand for hybrid vehicles.
The PX-series technology aims to bridge the gap between lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors, offering a reported capacity of 7,000 mAh and an energy density of 340 Wh/kg, with a continuous discharge rate of 30C. Molicel states this enables immediate power delivery and rapid energy capture, crucial for hybrid systems. The technology is designed to meet the performance and energy requirements of next-generation hybrid powertrains.
This development occurs amidst a shift in the automotive industry, where hybrid vehicle sales are reportedly gaining momentum as growth in pure electric vehicles slows. International Energy Agency reports indicate manufacturers are prioritizing hybrids. Recent market data suggests significant market share increases for hybrids in the US and Europe, with Asia-Pacific leading sales. The global hybrid vehicle market is projected to grow substantially in the coming years.
Regarding safety, Molicel's new cells have passed the UL9540A thermal runaway test, an international safety standard for energy storage systems. The company claims its advanced single-crystal technology reduces exothermic heat output by nearly 50% compared to traditional materials. Durability tests simulating hybrid operating conditions showed the PX-series retained 96% of its capacity after 1,000,000 cycles, suggesting a long operational lifespan.
Molicel suggests that the durability of their battery technology could surpass the lifespan of the vehicles themselves, addressing potential warranty concerns. The company positions itself as a key enabler for the global transition to hybrid vehicles by providing a battery solution that combines lithium-ion energy density with supercapacitor-like responsiveness and longevity.
