Molicel unveils next-generation cell technology for hybrid vehicles
Battery company Molicel has introduced its new INR-21700-P70X cell technology, designed to meet the growing demands of the hybrid vehicle market. The new technology aims to improve power output and energy density.

Taipei – Battery technology firm Molicel has unveiled its latest cell technology, the INR-21700-P70X, targeting the expanding hybrid and electric vehicle sector. The announcement was made at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference (AABC) Europe 2026. This new cell aims to bridge the gap between the energy density typical of lithium-ion batteries and the rapid charge/discharge capabilities of supercapacitors.
Molicel reports that the new cell offers a capacity of 7,000 mAh and an energy density of 340 Wh/kg. A key focus is the cell's high power discharge capability, rated at a continuous 30C and capable of a 900W peak output for short durations. This performance is particularly suited for hybrid vehicles, which require immediate power delivery for acceleration and efficient energy capture during regenerative braking.
The development aligns with automotive industry trends, as the growth of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) slows while demand for hybrid vehicles surges globally. Reports from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and other sources indicate that hybrids are capturing increasing market share in regions like the United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. This shift is driving the need for batteries with specific characteristics for hybrids: longevity, rapid response, and enhanced safety.
Molicel also highlights the safety features of its new cell, which meets stringent UL9540A standards. The company states the cell is designed to mitigate thermal runaway propagation in potential failure scenarios. Furthermore, the cells are built to withstand the high volume of rapid, shallow charge and discharge cycles characteristic of hybrid vehicle usage, retaining over 96% capacity after one million cycles.
