Montana Lakes Offer Abundant Bass and Northern Pike Fishing

As summer temperatures rise across Montana, anglers are increasingly targeting warm-water species such as smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and northern pike. The Montana Department of Commerce notes that these fisheries offer significant opportunities alongside the state's well-known cold-water species.

Several lakes are highlighted for their potential to produce trophy-sized fish. Fort Peck Lake, Noxon Reservoir, and Lake Elmo have yielded bass weighing nearly ten pounds, while Tongue River Reservoir holds the state record for northern pike at 37.5 pounds. August and September are considered optimal months for fishing these species, as increased water temperatures can lead to more aggressive feeding behavior.

Recommended fishing locations include Seeley Lake for largemouth bass and pike, the Thompson Chain of Lakes for both largemouth and smallmouth bass, and Noxon Reservoir, a large body of water known for bass and pike. Fort Peck Lake, with its extensive shoreline, is also noted for potential trophy catches.

To further engage anglers, Montana hosts several fishing tournaments. The Montana BASS Nation Qualifier and The Bass Federation Draw Series Qualifier are scheduled for Noxon Reservoir in August, and the Thompson Chain of Lakes will host the Montana Student Anglers tournament for youth.

Before fishing, individuals are advised to check weather conditions, review the 2026 Montana fishing regulations, and obtain the necessary licenses. More information on Montana's fishing opportunities can be found at visitmt.com/things-to-do/fishing.
