Montes del Plata Completes Transition to Talc-Free Eucalyptus Pulp

Montes del Plata, a joint operation between Stora Enso and Arauco, has completed its transition to fully talc-free eucalyptus pulp production as of spring 2026. This marks a significant step in product quality and aligns with evolving health and regulatory expectations.

The initiative began in 2023 when Stora Enso and Arauco commenced a process to identify alternatives to talc, a substance traditionally used to control pitch formation in eucalyptus pulp production. Eucalyptus naturally contains resins that can cause pitch deposits during manufacturing.

Following extensive laboratory testing in 2024, the companies selected an organic pitch control additive. This additive complies with food-contact regulations and recommendations, including requirements from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).

After successful industrial trials and process adjustments, Montes del Plata has now implemented the talc-free pulp production. Carolina Lima, Vice President Segment Eucalyptus at Stora Enso, stated that customers have responded positively, valuing the company's position as a forerunner in Europe to move away from talc, and noted that the change has resulted in an even cleaner product.
