Moonshot AI's Kimi 3 Expected to Challenge Top-Tier AI Models

Chinese AI firm Moonshot AI is preparing to launch its Kimi 3 model, which is expected to significantly close the performance gap with leading proprietary AI models, including Anthropic's Opus 4.8, according to a Financial Times report citing anonymous sources.

Moonshot AI's previous Kimi K2 models have already gained traction in the open-source AI community, achieving strong benchmark scores and demonstrating capabilities that approach those of established frontier models.

The upcoming Kimi K3 is intended to further bridge the divide between open and closed-source AI. The Financial Times reports that Kimi K3 will be China's largest open-weight AI model, boasting a parameter count between 2 trillion and 3 trillion, with an expected release in the "coming days."

In parallel, Moonshot AI is reportedly seeking new funding that would value the company at $31.5 billion. This follows a recent $2 billion funding round in May at a $20 billion valuation, reflecting the burgeoning demand for open-source AI solutions.
