Motorway A10: Tauerntunnel and Katschbergtunnel Renovation to Begin in 2027
Renovations of the Tauerntunnel and Katschbergtunnel on Austria's A10 motorway, a key north-south route, are scheduled from autumn 2027 to 2033. Significant traffic congestion is anticipated.
Drivers on Austria's A10 Tauern Autobahn (Salzburg – Villach) face six challenging years starting in autumn 2027 as major renovations commence on both the Tauerntunnel and Katschbergtunnel. The Austrian motorway company ASFINAG has announced this as its largest tunnel renovation project to date.
The Tauerntunnel, measuring 6.8 kilometers, and the 6-kilometer Katschbergtunnel are critical components of the A10, Austria's primary north-south artery. For six years, traffic in each tunnel will be reduced to a single lane per direction, with speed limits between 60 and 80 km/h expected.
ASFINAG plans to conduct the extensive work while traffic continues to flow. Measures such as driving bans and restrictions on exiting the motorway will be implemented to prevent diversions onto smaller roads. Preparatory phases will also necessitate temporary overnight and full road closures.
Officials predict traffic backups of up to 30 kilometers during peak travel times such as Easter, Ascension Day, and Pentecost. A pause in construction is planned for the main summer travel months of July and August, during which both tunnels will operate normally. For extended delays, travelers may consider detouring via the Felbertauern Federal Road (B108), the Pyhrn Autobahn (A9), or the Brenner Autobahn (A13).
